Graphic design is the art of designing letter forms for typefaces, processing images, creating unique color schemes, logos, images and so on for books, magazines, companies, advertising agencies, businesses etc. Graphic design basically utilizes creative art skills to communicate a message in a better, more understandable way. It affects our daily life in so many ways – from the snazzy billboards you see while driving every day, to the cool and colorful t-shirts and mugs that we like to buy so much.
Graphic design informs, creates, and colors communication in such a way that the way it is presented makes the person understand it clearly. It combines technology and art, making the end result an important type of communication, using images and typeface/colors as tools. For example, the Golden Arches immediately remind one of McDonald’s – the graphic design for the logo of McDonald’s has been made in such a way that it is now associated with the brand. People respond to certain color combinations, images, logos and so on in a certain way based on how they are used and the message they send across. Graphic design makes sure that the response they elicit is according to what the company/client wants.
Graphic design is used by companies, as explained above, to bring out their brand, underline its beliefs and features and let the audience connect with it. It has been truly said that a picture is worth a thousand words – images are powerful tools of communication and in today’s world, advertising and design uses a lot of minimalism. A powerful message or visual pun is coded into a simple yet influential image which people can relate to.
Graphic design also uses different kinds of type face to convey a message. Various elements like the shape and size of the letters, spacing, and type size and so on need to be taken into consideration for this. For example, an ornate, delicate type face would be suitable for an advertisement for a luxury brand. Loud, pop art-inspired type face would look good on t-shirts and sans-serif type face would look good for a business proposal.
Symbols are another aspect of graphic design used by companies. Symbols and logos are the corporate stamp of the company – the way the logo is designed shapes a company’s values, ideologies, and activities in a big way. It also affects the things people associate with the company and how they identify it. The Pepsi logo, for instance, is easily recognized as the sphere with red and blue swirls, and it is commonly associated with fizzy, fun drinks.
Graphic design is a vital tool that is required for many companies in order to create a recognizable identity for the brands they are associated with. It ensures that the company’s brand identity is firmly established and that it gives the company a sense of direction. In addition, it is an important persuasive tool, which is why people often like to shop for products with recognizable aspects of the company’s logo, official colors and designs and so on. It gives the brand an identity and possessing a product from that brand gives the buyer an identity too.
